Textile Designing: Types, Importance and Impacts

A sample gives you a physical reference for the product being developed. Review it against your original brief, and make clear which details are accepted and which need correction. A general response such as “looks good” can leave important decisions unresolved.

Check the dimensions and fit

Compare the sample with your size chart or reference. For apparel, review the key measurements and how the garment fits during its intended use. For gloves, mitts or a utility product, check the relevant dimensions, closures and handling. Note the exact measurement and location when requesting a change.

Confirm materials and construction

Check that the material, thickness and feel match the agreed requirement. Inspect seams, binding, reinforcement and closures as applicable to the item. A photograph can help explain a concern, but physical features such as stretch, padding and fit need to be assessed on the sample itself.

If your order requires testing or particular supporting documentation, raise that requirement before approval. A sample review does not establish a certification or safety rating.

Review branding on the product

Assess artwork size, position, colour and finish on the actual item. Check label wording and placement as well. Mark any corrections clearly, using dimensions or an annotated photograph rather than relying on descriptions such as “slightly higher”.

Include packing requirements

Confirm the unit presentation and any buyer-specific packing instructions before the order is finalized. If the packaging has not been sampled, identify what still needs to be agreed so it is not mistaken for an approved part of the product.

Send one consolidated response

Group changes into a single list with photographs or measurements where useful. Separate required corrections from optional suggestions. Ask which changes require another sample and which can be confirmed through the agreed specification.

Keep a record of the accepted sample and any final adjustments. Changes requested after approval may affect the materials, production steps or schedule, so discuss them before work continues.
