A fabric name alone rarely describes everything needed for a garment. Two fabrics with the same composition can differ in weight, knit, stretch and surface finish. A clear brief explains what the material needs to do and which details must match a reference.
Describe who will wear the item and the activity it is intended for. Explain whether you want a lightweight team jersey, a more structured top or a close-fitting training garment. Identify the areas where coverage, flexibility or ventilation matter to the design.
Avoid relying only on terms such as “premium” or “high performance”. Describe the qualities you expect, or provide a physical reference that demonstrates them.
Include the preferred composition, fabric weight and construction where known. If you do not have those details, send a reference swatch or garment and explain what you like about it. Mark which features should stay and what should change.
Polyester, cotton, stretch blends and mesh have different applications within apparel. The selection should be reviewed for the particular item rather than assumed from the product category.
For fitted garments, explain the movement and fit you expect. A reference can help communicate stretch and feel, but the completed sample also needs review because seams, panels and sizing affect the result.
If a specific measured property or test result is required, state it in the enquiry so its feasibility and supporting evidence can be assessed. Do not treat a general fabric description as proof of a tested performance level.
Provide colour references and say whether garments must coordinate with another item. Share planned print or embroidery positions early, since the material and surface finish influence decoration choices. Review colour and decoration on the relevant sample before approval.
Separate essential requirements from preferences that can be discussed. Include the expected quantity and size range so material sourcing is considered alongside the order. If an alternative material is proposed, review its effect on the garment before accepting it.
The final fabric choice should be recorded with the approved product specification. That gives the buyer and manufacturer a common reference for the order.
